The Ombudsman for Children Emily Logan today, 1st July, welcomed the decision by the Minister for Justice to publish the findings of her Special Inquiry in to the exercise by members of the Garda Síochána of powers under section 12 of the Child Care Act in respect of a child in Athlone and a child in Tallaght, who were removed from the care of their families in October last year.

On 9th December, former Minister for Justice and Equality, Mr Alan Shatter T.D. made a Ministerial order appointing Emily Logan to carry out an inquiry under Section 42 of the Garda Síochána Act, 2005 (as amended by the Criminal Justice Act 2007).
This Order [titled Garda Síochána Act 2005 (Section 42) (Special Inquiries Relating to Garda Síochána) Order 2013] has been made by way of Statutory Instrument and was laid before the Houses of the Oireachtas.
This Order appoints Emily Logan to carry out the Inquiry in respect of events concerning the taking into care of the children from two Roma families in October 2013 under Section 12 of the Child Care Act 1991.
